Google is rolling out new anti-theft features to select Android phones, enhancing data protection if your device gets stolen. The latest update introduces features like Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and an improved version of Remote Lock. While Remote Lock has been available to many users for some time, the new Theft Detection Lock and Offline Device Lock were first announced in May 2024 and are designed to boost security further.
Theft Detection Lock uses AI and the phone’s sensors to recognize theft-related motions, such as someone snatching your phone and running away. It can even detect theft scenarios involving bikes or cars, automatically locking the phone and blocking access to apps and data.
Offline Device Lock is another addition, which kicks in when the phone remains disconnected from the internet for an extended period, preventing unauthorized access.
Remote Lock, which allows you to lock your phone remotely using just your phone number, is also part of the update. This is helpful when Find My Device is turned off or you’re unable to access your Google account.
While it’s not clear yet which phones will receive these features, users should ensure they have the latest version of Google Play Services to take advantage of these security upgrades.
