At CES 2026 in Las Vegas, Samsung is showcasing the impressive durability of its foldable OLED displays, using an unexpected yet effective method: basketballs. With the high cost of replacing damaged foldable screens, durability has always been a key focus for Samsung, and the company is proving its advancements with a dramatic durability test.

Testing the Durability of Foldable OLED Panels

Samsung’s CES 2026 exhibition features a “Robot Basketball” zone where 18 foldable OLED panels are subjected to a unique challenge. Mounted on a basketball backboard, these panels have targets on them. A robotic arm repeatedly throws basketballs at the panels to test their resistance and ability to function without damage. This is not just a gimmick—Samsung is serious about quantifying how far its foldable OLED panels have come in terms of durability.

The company has also incorporated other rigorous tests to emphasize the strength of its foldable OLED technology. One test involves dropping steel balls from a height of approximately 30 centimeters onto the panels to compare their durability against competing products. Despite the harsh tests, Samsung’s foldable OLED panels continue to operate normally without any visible damage or image distortion.

Extreme Cold Test for OLED Technology

Samsung Display is also testing the resilience of its OLED technology in extreme cold conditions. At CES 2026, the company has placed automotive OLED displays inside a refrigerator to demonstrate their performance under freezing temperatures. Even at -20°C, the OLED panels maintained a response time of 0.2 milliseconds, identical to their performance at room temperature. This test highlights the versatility of Samsung’s OLED technology, showing it can withstand extreme environments without compromising its functionality.
