Samsung-Tesla Chip Deal Lifts Stock but Worries Linger

The Samsung-Tesla chip deal has sparked renewed interest in Samsung Electronics, pushing its shares up for a second day. This comes after the South Korean tech giant secured a $16.5 billion contract to supply artificial intelligence chips to Tesla. Despite the stock boost, industry analysts caution that key hurdles still threaten Samsung’s long-term chip ambitions.

Samsung’s foundry business—its contract manufacturing arm—has remained unprofitable and trails far behind dominant rival TSMC. The company also lags in memory chip competitiveness, where it battles SK Hynix. Analysts note that although the Tesla partnership is significant, Samsung still faces difficulty in attracting more large customers in both areas.

Ben Barringer, a global tech analyst at Quilter Cheviot, said the deal could breathe life into Samsung’s chip division. However, he added that its memory business still needs substantial improvement. Recent delays in delivering high-bandwidth memory chips to Nvidia, a critical U.S. client, have affected Samsung’s earnings and stock price.

The Samsung-Tesla chip deal could revitalize the company’s new Texas-based chip factory, which has struggled due to poor yields of advanced chips. Elon Musk confirmed that Tesla’s next-generation AI6 chips would be produced at the facility in Taylor, Texas. These chips are intended for future Tesla products, including self-driving vehicles, robots, and data centers.

However, analysts warn that actual product rollouts could take one to two years. Samsung must first prove it can manufacture these chips with high volume and quality to meet Tesla’s exacting standards. Russ Mould of AJ Bell noted that Samsung likely negotiated this long-term deal on favorable terms to prove its contract manufacturing strength.

Chairman Jay Y. Lee’s trip to Washington also drew attention. Although officially described as a general business trip, it coincides with rising trade and semiconductor cooperation between South Korea and the U.S. A trade official clarified that the Samsung-Tesla chip deal remains unrelated to current tariff negotiations.

The broader market rose 0.7% on Tuesday, but Samsung’s shares closed with a modest 0.3% gain after earlier dipping over 2%. This follows a 7% jump on Monday, fueled by the Tesla news. Market watchers say Samsung needs to sustain this momentum with real improvements in operations.

While the deal reduces supply-chain risk and could stabilize Samsung’s U.S. operations, its long-term success hinges on execution. Matt Britzman of Hargreaves Lansdown emphasized that commercial use of the chips remains distant and that delivery quality will be critical.

The Samsung-Tesla chip deal offers Samsung a chance to regain footing in the competitive chip landscape. Yet, it remains under pressure to deliver results—not just promises.
