Samsung Heavy Industries has achieved a major clean energy milestone. Specifically, it received Approval in Principle (AIP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for its Samsung floating nuclear power platform. This design enables safe offshore nuclear power generation.

The development comes shortly after June news that Dutch contractor Allseas plans to power its vessels with nuclear energy. In response, Samsung fast-tracked its Floating Small Modular Reactor (FSMR) concept. Notably, this platform can support multiple types of small modular reactors (SMRs).

More precisely, the certified version carries two Smart 100 SMRs. The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) developed this reactor. Furthermore, Korea’s Nuclear Safety & Security Commission granted it Standard Design Approval in September 2024.

During the process, Samsung led the integration of SMRs into the floating structure. It also designed the full power facility layout and created a multi-barrier containment system. Meanwhile, KAERI adapted its land-based Smart SMR for marine environments—ensuring robust safety at sea.

One key advantage of the Samsung floating nuclear power platform is its modular layout. Indeed, it groups systems by function. As a result, engineers can install different SMR types by modifying only the reactor compartment—without overhauling the entire vessel.

Moreover, Samsung placed the reactor and safety systems inside a single containment vessel. This setup allows full onshore installation and testing before offshore deployment. Consequently, projects finish faster, safer, and with greater predictability.

Young-kyu Ahn, head of Samsung’s offshore division, called the ABS approval “an important milestone in opening the offshore nuclear market.”

Similarly, Jin-young Cho of KAERI said the certification “demonstrates Korea’s nuclear innovation strength.” He added, “We will accelerate development to position Korea as a global leader in offshore nuclear power.”

Looking ahead, the platform could power remote islands, offshore oil rigs, or large ships. After all, these sites often lack reliable grid connections. With ABS validation, Samsung now leads the emerging maritime clean energy sector.

Ultimately, this achievement is more than technical—it’s strategic. By combining Korean engineering, modular design, and international certification, Samsung is paving the way for carbon-free energy far beyond land.
