Samsung 6G spectrum leadership reached a new level with Juyeon Song’s appointment to chair Asia-Pacific’s main spectrum coordination group. A lead researcher at Samsung Electronics, Song won the chair position of the 6G Spectrum Drafting Group under the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT). She secured the role after a competitive selection involving six other countries. Her election boosts Samsung’s and South Korea’s influence in global 6G development.
APT is a regional organization that unites Asia-Pacific nations to guide information and communication policy. One of its key roles is preparing countries for the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC), held by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). WRC-27, scheduled for October 2027, will decide which frequencies support 6G worldwide.
As chair, Song will align views from 38 APT member countries into a shared regional proposal. This collective strategy aims to secure favorable 6G frequency bands for Asia-Pacific. Her leadership gives Samsung a strong position in shaping future 6G spectrum choices, especially mid-band frequencies critical to mobile networks.
Juyeon Song’s experience makes her ideal for the role. She led the ITU-R’s 5G Vision Group and later served as vice chair of Study Group 5, which focuses on terrestrial services. Now, with her focus on 6G, she helps Samsung strengthen both its technical and regulatory influence.
Since 2019, Samsung has accelerated 6G research. Its Advanced Communications Research Center leads the effort. The company also published two key documents: the 6G White Paper and the 6G Spectrum White Paper. These outline Samsung’s vision for next-gen networks and technical requirements. The documents support Samsung’s position as a thought leader in Samsung 6G spectrum policy.
Samsung continues to work with global standard-setting bodies like the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). At the same time, the company prepares to acquire key spectrum assets. With Song guiding the region’s discussions, Samsung boosts its chance of success at WRC-27.
WRC is held every four years. The 2027 conference is crucial for all wireless industries, including mobile, satellite, and broadcasting. It sets global frequency rules. Because of its impact, the WRC is often called the “Olympics of spectrum.” With Song’s leadership and Samsung’s vision, the company moves closer to a dominant role in the 6G era.
