Samsung Display has once again proven its leadership in OLED technology, and it seems Apple is following suit. According to a recent report from ETNews, Apple will use Samsung’s OLED panel featuring the Color Filter on Encapsulation (COE) technology in its 20th anniversary iPhone, expected to launch in 2027. This development highlights the growing collaboration between the two tech giants, as Apple follows Samsung’s footsteps in utilizing cutting-edge display innovations.

What is COE Technology?

COE (Color Filter on Encapsulation) technology represents a breakthrough in OLED displays. While traditional OLED screens use a polariser layer to reduce reflections and improve contrast, this layer absorbs a significant amount of light, limiting brightness and increasing power consumption. COE, on the other hand, encapsulates the color filter directly into the OLED’s protective layer, resulting in several key advantages:

  1. Reduced Thickness: The COE design reduces the thickness of the display, allowing for sleeker devices.
  2. Higher Brightness: By eliminating the light absorption of the polariser, COE technology ensures that more of the OLED’s brightness reaches the user’s eyes.
  3. Power Efficiency: With less light being absorbed, COE OLED displays consume less power, improving battery life.

Samsung Leading the Way with OLED

Samsung Display’s innovation in OLED technology has been pivotal in enhancing the performance of modern smartphones. For the upcoming Galaxy S26 series, Samsung is integrating COE OLED displays, which will further elevate the visual experience while maintaining high energy efficiency. With the Galaxy S26 series set for a February 2026 launch, Samsung will be the first to introduce this technology.

Apple, on the other hand, will reportedly follow suit a year later, in 2027, with its highly anticipated 20th anniversary iPhone. The incorporation of Samsung’s OLED technology underscores Apple’s commitment to delivering top-tier displays for its users while also tapping into the latest advancements in smartphone display technology.

The Future of OLED Technology in Smartphones

As display technology continues to evolve, both Samsung and Apple are setting the standard for smartphone screens. With COE technology, OLED displays will become thinner, brighter, and more energy-efficient, leading to enhanced user experiences. The shift towards this technology also sets the stage for more sustainable smartphones, as the reduction in power consumption will help extend battery life while delivering better visual quality.

This move marks a significant moment in the ongoing rivalry and collaboration between Samsung and Apple. While Samsung is leading the way with its upcoming Galaxy S26 series, Apple’s adoption of COE OLED technology for its 20th anniversary iPhone will keep the competitive pressure on Samsung. This tech race is expected to push both companies to continue innovating in the years to come, benefiting consumers with improved display technology and smarter devices.
